The Build At A Glance
This one is a big Baja shelf. The only pool we have ever done with a bigger Baja step belongs to the homeowner''s parents, and that one was on another level. This shelf is huge on its own. It runs the full short side of the pool and gives you a real lounging area in shallow water instead of a thin little ledge you can barely sit on.
If you have never heard the term, a Baja shelf is the tanning shelf at the entry to the pool. Usually around 9 to 12 inches deep, flat, and wide enough to set chairs in. The reason people are asking for them bigger now is simple. The shelf is where most of the day actually happens. Kids hang out there. Adults sit in loungers with a drink. Dogs cool off on it. The pool itself is for swimming, but the shelf is for living.
Two Umbrella Sleeves Built Into The Shelf
You will see two umbrella sleeves cast right into the shelf. These are sleeves we set in the concrete before the shelf is poured so a standard pole umbrella drops straight in. No base, no weight, no umbrella blowing across the yard when the wind picks up in the afternoon.
Two sleeves instead of one matters more than people think. One umbrella covers maybe one lounger if the sun is straight overhead. Two umbrellas cover both chairs and the space between them, and you can angle them as the sun moves. In Phoenix that is the difference between using the shelf at 2 p.m. or hiding inside until 5.
The Bubbler
There is a bubbler on the shelf too. A bubbler is a small water feature that pushes a low column of water up out of the shelf, kind of like a soft fountain you can sit next to. Two reasons we put them in. First, the sound. Moving water on a back patio changes the whole feel of a yard, even a small bubbler does the job. Second, it gives kids something to play in when they are too small for the deep end. They will sit on the shelf and mess with that bubbler for an hour.
Dual Access Stairs On Both Sides
This is the part that makes the pool actually function like a resort instead of just looking like one. There are stairs on both ends. You can walk in from one side and head straight to the swim-up bar without crossing the whole pool. Or walk in from the other side and you are right at the basketball hoop end.
Most pools have one set of steps in a corner and that is it. Everyone funnels through the same spot. Drinks, towels, kids, the cleaning hose, all bottlenecking at one corner. Two access points spreads the traffic out and lets the pool serve two different activities at the same time without anyone tripping over each other.
Swim-Up Bar On One Side, Basketball On The Other
The swim-up bar lines up with the outdoor kitchen on the deck. You sit on a submerged bench in the pool, the bar top is at deck level, and someone on dry land can hand drinks across without anyone getting wet. It is the kind of feature people use way more than they expect. Birthdays, holidays, a slow Sunday, it gets used.
The other end has the basketball setup. Deeper water, room to actually shoot, and because of the dual stairs you can walk right into that end without wading through the lounging zone.
Why This Layout Works
The reason this pool feels like a resort is not any single feature. It is that the design lets multiple things happen at once. Two people lounging on the shelf under umbrellas. Two people at the swim-up bar. Two kids on the basketball end. Nobody is in anyone''s way. Most backyard pools force one activity at a time because the layout was never planned for more than that.
If you are thinking about building, the takeaway is this. Decide what you actually want to do in the pool before you draw it. Then plan the entry points, the depth changes, and the shelf size around those activities. The features come last. A bubbler on a poorly laid out pool is still a poorly laid out pool.
