Why Big Fire Pits Need Dual Burners

A single burner in an oversized fire pit leaves you with a small flame in a big empty pan. Here's why we run two 24 inch burners on XL builds and how the gas line has to be sized to match.

When a client wants an oversized fire pit, the burner setup is the part most people never think about. It's also the part that decides whether the finished piece actually works or just looks like a big empty box with a small flame in the middle.

The fire pit in this video is an XL build. Instead of dropping a single burner in the center, we combined two separate 24 inch burners into one system. That's the only way to get a flame that fills the pan and throws real heat to everyone sitting around it.

Why one burner isn't enough on a large pit

A standard 18 to 24 inch burner is sized for a standard fire pit. Once you scale the pit up past that, the burner doesn't scale with it. You end up with a small ring of fire sitting in the middle of a huge pan, surrounded by dead space and cold glass. It looks underbuilt because it is underbuilt.

Heat output is the other half of it. A single burner in a big pit gives you a flame you can see, but not a flame you can actually feel from three or four feet away. That defeats the whole reason people ask for a fire pit in the first place.

How a dual burner setup actually works

A dual burner system runs two burners off a shared gas supply, spaced across the length of the pan so the flame pattern covers the full opening. Each burner has its own orifice sizing, and the gas line has to be sized to feed both at the same time without starving either one.

That last part matters. A lot of installs get this wrong by tapping into a line that's too small, and both burners end up running weak. On this build the line was sized for the combined BTU load from the start, so when it's cranked on both burners hit full output at the same time.

What it feels like in person

With both burners running you get a wide, even flame across the whole pit instead of one tall column in the middle. Everyone sitting around it catches warmth, not just the two people directly downwind. The flame also reads as one continuous fire because the burners are close enough that the flame patterns blend.

That's the wow factor part. If you're paying for an XL pit, the flame should match the pit. Building something this big and then putting a puny little flame down the middle would be a waste of the pit and a waste of the client's money.

When you should ask about dual burners

Anytime the interior opening of the pit is longer than about 36 inches, or the shape is rectangular and wide, a single burner is probably going to look weak. Round pits over 40 inches across run into the same issue. If a builder is quoting a large pit and only speccing one burner, that's worth a direct question before you sign anything.

The cost difference between one burner and two is small compared to the total build cost. The difference in how the finished pit actually performs is not small at all.
